As of February 28 Weeks Medical Center is now producing it's heat and hot water from a new Hurst biomass boiler located on the hospital campus. The wood chips that fuel the boiler are supplied by A.B. Logging of Lancaster. There is a smaller boiler that will heat hot water in the summer. The biomass boiler emits mostly water vapor which is significantly cleaner that that which was being emitted when oil was being burned. On an annualized basis this new heating system is on track to save the hospital $200,000 per year. Using locally produced low-grade wood, boosting the local economy and saving significant dollars for the hospital makes this project a win, win, win.
